Leaders of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina voted to reaffirm the tribe's ban on same-sex marriage. The tribal code already defines marriage as a union between one "man" and one "woman." But the council took action last month to confirm that sex-sex marriages can't be licensed or solemnized on the reservation. Same-sex marriage is legal in North Carolina and tribal law recognizes marriages performed in other jurisdictions. So far, it doesn't appear that anyone has tried to change tribal law to recognize same-sex marriages. Get the Story:
