The Shinnecock Nation of New York will allow felons to hold office under certain conditions. Tribal members who were convicted of a non-sexual felony and were released from incarceration for five years before an election can now run for the office of trustee, Newsday reported. The candidate cannot be on active parole or probation and cannot be a registered sex offender. "We all make mistakes," a tribal member told the paper. "You are elected on your merits or you don't get in." Trustees who are convicted while in office can still be removed if they are convicted of a felony. Get the Story:
