Alaska State Troopers arrived in the Native village of Shageluk on Wednesday to investigate a double homicide.

Flossie Semone, 46, and John Arrow, 57, were killed sometime on Tuesday. Due to the lack of local law enforcement, Chief Roger Hamilton Jr. of the Shageluk Tribe detained the suspect in the community building by tying him to a chair, according to news reports.

News reports identified the suspect as 21-year-old Everrett Semone. He is said to be the son of the murdered couple.

The troopers said they arrived in the village at 10am after flying from Aniak, about 100 miles away. Local leaders disputed that account.

“The community of Shageluk is extremely outraged by the lack of medical attention and emergency response by the Alaska State Troopers," the tribe and the city government said in a statement, The Alaska Dispatch News reported.

A commercial flight between Aniak and Shageluk takes less than an hour although a private plane could arrive in less time. The troopers reportedly took a chartered flight.

Local leaders also said they approached the troopers recently with concerns about the suspect. The village lacks a health aide and other medical services.

“We were unable to get help for him this past month,” Joyanne Hamilton, the principal teacher at the school in the village, told the Alaska Dispatch News. “And it resulted in this.”
