The leader of the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak faces questions about his spending as the organization struggles to pay its bills. Grand Chief Stephen Harper used the organization's credit card for guitars, car repairs and flights for his girlfriend, APTN reported, citing internal documents. An accountant was unable to conduct an audit due to lack of documentation. “There is a risk that Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada may put the organization in co-management or worse still, the organization may be placed in a third-party administration,” the accountant's report stated, APTN reported. MKO had a deficit of $976, 025 as of last year, according to the accountant. But Harper has assured Native leaders that the organization will be able to host the election for a new Assembly of First Nations in December. “I don’t have any confidence in Grand Chief Harper, especially in telling the truth,” one Native leader APTN.
