The Interior Department has transferred another $2.9 million into the Cobell scholarship fund. The $3.4 billion Cobell trust fund settlement established a $1.9 billion land consolidation program. A portion of every sale of the Land Buy-Back Program for Tribal Nations goes to the scholarship fund. “This funding for the Cobell Education Scholarship Fund will help open doors for the next generation of Native American leaders through higher education,” Interior Department Solicitor Hilary Tompkins said in a press release today. “This fund is an important tool to help students across Indian Country to pursue their dreams and have success in the 21st century workplace.” The scholarship fund is administered by the American Indian College Fund. A board of five trustees will approve and monitor the scholarship distribution policy. The late Elouise Cobell, a member of the Blackfeet Nation who was the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit, insisted on a scholarship fund as part of the settlement. Get the Story:
