Former employee sentenced for stealing from Suquamish Tribe

A former employee of the Suquamish Tribe of Washington was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison on embezzlement charges.

Renee Pearl Peleti, 46, worked for the tribe's Indian Child Welfare Department for more than five years. She admitted that she used about $146,496 in fraudulent checks, food vouchers and gift cards, the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Western District of Washington said in a press release.

Peleti, who is a member of the Nooksack Tribe, was ordered to pay $146,496 in restitution. She also must spend three years in supervised release following her prison term.
