The Ute Tribe and the University of Utah signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the use of the "Ute" name.

The five-year agreement calls on the university to create the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on American Indian Affairs. The unpaid position will be filled by a tribal member.

The university also agreed to "secure funding" for tribal members and other Indian students who attend the school. Ute students will be eligible for special scholarships.

University President David W. Pershing went to the reservation on Tuesday to sign the agreement. "It was very honorable that he came out here," Chairman Gordon Howell told The Salt Lake Tribune. "It shows that they respect us and the name of the Utes."
