Leader of Lower Brule Sioux Tribe addresses Keystone XL letter

A letter that ties the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe of South Dakota to the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline is only a contingency, Vice Chairman Boyd Gourneau said.

In November, the tribal council approved a resolution that authorizes Chairman Michael Jandreau to write a letter of support regarding the pipeline to President Barack Obama and the State Department. But since the project hasn't been approved, Gourneau said the letter hasn't gone out.

Gourneau previously said the tribe remains officially opposed to the pipeline. But the resolution has raised concerns among tribal members and other tribal leaders who have been more adamant in their stance against the project.
