Charles Locust, the assistant chief of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma, died on Saturday. He was 57. Locust passed away at Stilwell Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness, the tribe said in a press release. Visitation will take place tomorrow, with funeral services to be held on Wednesday. Locust was first elected to the UKB council in 2005. He won re-election in 2012. He was active in Indian affairs in Oklahoma and with the National Congress of American Indians.
