Oregon governor expected to sign bill to allow Indian mascots

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber (D) is expected to sign a bill that allows public schools to keep their Indian mascots with tribal approval.

Senate Bill 1509 requires the Oregon Board of Education to develop new rules for the use of mascots. Schools will be able to keep their Indian names, symbols and imagery if supported by a tribe.

Some 15 schools use Indian mascots or imagery.
