Former treasurer of Mashantucket Tribe spared prison for theft

Steven Thomas, a former treasurer of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut, was sentenced to three months of home confinement on theft charges.

Thomas faced 12 to 18 months in federal prison. But the judge was impressed by his reform, which began before he was indicted on charges that he stole $177,603 when he worked for the tribe's natural resources department and before he became treasurer.

Thomas has agreed to pay $17,7603 in restitution and perform 200 hours of community service.

Thomas's brother, former chairman Michael Thomas, also was found guilty of stealing from the tribe. He was sentenced to 18 months but is appealing.
