Former Jicarilla Apache Nation employee admits theft of $215K

A former employee of the Jicarilla Apache Nation of New Mexico pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $215,00 from the tribe.

Robert G. Wells, 63, was the comptroller for the tribe's utility authority. He admitted that he made unauthorized transfers from a bank account.

"During this morning’s proceedings, Wells pled guilty to all three counts of the indictment and admitted embezzling money from a Wells Fargo Bank account belonging to the Jicarilla Apache Nation’s Utility Authority through an unauthorized withdrawal and two unauthorized transfers," the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a press release.

Wells has agreed to pay restitution to the tribe. A sentencing date hasn't been set.
