Campo Band cancels controversial wind plant on reservation

The Campo Band of Kumeyaay Indians in California has put an end to a controversial wind project on the reservation.

The tribe planned to erect as many as 85 turbines that would have generated up to 250 megawatts of power. But the project was canceled after tribal members raised environmental concerns.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs had already started the environmental review process for the 4,000-acre project but an official notice of the cancellation was posted last week in the Federal Register.

The tribe still operates 25 turbines on the reservation.
