BIA issues final decision against Tolowa Nation of California
Monday, January 27, 2014
The Bureau of Indian Affairs issued a final determination against federal recognition for the Tolowa Nation of California.
According to a press release, the tribe failed to show that a predominant portion of its group comprises a distinct community and has existed as a community from historical times until the present.
The decision will become final 90 days after a notice has been published in the Federal Register.
Since 1978, only one California tribe has successfully gained recognition through the BIA's process.
