Assault charge dropped against chairman of Lumbee Tribe

An assault charge has been dropped against Chairman Paul Brooks of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.

Louise Mitchell, the former secretary of the tribal council, accused Brooks of assaulting her at tribal headquarters. She said was forcefully removed by the chairman for trying to post official notices.

Brooks denied the charge and Robeson County District Attorney Johnson Britt decided to drop it after a "cooling-off period" but Mitchell said she wasn't happy.

"I am a victim and the law is not working to protect me," Mitchell told The Robesonian.

Brooks is facing a recall petition.
