Laguna Pueblo has taken over operations of a fire station in Cibola County, New Mexico.
The tribe was looking to start its own station when the county offered the existing Cebolleta facility. Both parties reached an agreement that went into effect on January 1.
The county owns the fire station and the property while the tribe pays for staffing. Emergency response times have already improved.
“It would take up to 45 minutes in an emergency response,” County Commission Chairman Eddie Michael told The Cibola Beacon. “Now, because County and Laguna officials have worked together, the response time is 3-5 minutes. Insurance rates should go down."
