Mexican Indians make up large segment of Native population

Indians from tribes based in Mexico make up the fourth largest segment of the American Indian and Native American population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

"Mexican American Indian" ranked behind Cherokee, Navajo, Choctaw as the largest tribal groups, according to the report The American Indian and Native Population: 2010. They were followed Chippewa, Sioux, Apache and and Blackfeet.

The 2010 Census was the first to include the "Mexican American Indian" grouping.
