Fashion designer Patricia Michaels of Taos Pueblo has been named Citizen of the Year by The Taos News, her hometown paper.

Michaels was selected for her "creativity" and for the "positive attention she brought to Taos," the paper said. The designer gained national attention for nearly winning season 11 of the television show Project Runway.

“What’s come from all of it, which is positive, is that I have gotten letters from the youth,” Michaels told the paper. “They have said they are embracing their elders. I’ve had youth come to the door with their grandparents. I have elderly men and women who pray and send me gifts of what they do and what they make. I have given them incentive not to give up.”
