The
Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation is leading an effort to start a new tribal college in California.
The tribe has been hosting meetings to launch the
California Tribal College. More than 40 tribes in the state have already endorsed the plan.
“Our strength depends upon educating our next generations in the history, language and government of our tribes,” Chairman Marshall McKay said at the 28th annual
California Indian Conference and Gathering, The Sacramento Bee reported. “A third of our native population is under 18. They hold the future of our families and tribal sovereignty in their hands, and every Native American child needs and deserves a culturally relevant educational experience.”
McKay said northern California would be an ideal location for the campus. The college would offer undergraduate degrees and certificate programs in tribal government, the Bee reported.
D-Q University was a tribal college that operated in the state until it ran into accreditation, management and financial problems.
