Brandon Stevens, a council member for the
Oneida Nation, criticized a bill that would make it harder to eliminate Indian mascots in Wisconsin.
Stevens said all 11 tribes in the state oppose the use of Indian people and imagery as mascots. "In no case will a mascot, logo or team name ever honor the Oneida," he told lawmakers, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
In 2010, the Democrat-controlled Legislature passed a bill that allows people to file complaints about Indian mascots. The school district must show that the mascot is not discriminatory.
Now that Republicans are in control of the Legislature, they are pushing a bill that would make it harder to get rid of Indian mascots. It would also reverse existing decisions against mascots.
