The Mescalero Apache Nation of New Mexico held a primary election on Tuesday.
Danny Breuninger Sr. and Ben Martinez were the top vote-getters for the president's post. They will advance to the November general election.
Two former presidents -- Mark Chino and Frederick Chino Sr., who resigned after being placed on leave earlier this year -- did not get enough votes to advance.
Sandra Platero, who was acting as president following Frederick Chino's resignation, and Gabe Aguilar were the top vote-getters for the vice president's post.
Tribal voters also narrowed the field for four council seats.
