Oglala Lakota takes on Miss SD Teen

PINE RIDGE — Justina Lebeau of Batesland has earned the right to serve as a contestant at the annual pageant. Lebeau, a 2013 graduate of Pine Ridge High School was salutatorian of her class as well as an inductee to the National Honor Society.

In school she participated in cross country, track and basketball. She was a state qualifier for cross country and track. She was a member of the Lady Thorpes basketball team that played in the state tournament.

Justina traveled to Australia to participate in the Down Under Sports. She ran for the USA Cross Country Team in 2011, which lead to her membership on the 2013 USA Track Team.

Running, riding horse, playing softball and fancy shawl dancing are several of Justina’s hobbies that keep her busy. Justina is currently attending Black Hills State College in Spearfish where she has not declared a major. Her future plans include getting a degree in Animal Behavior.

Don and Connie Lebeau are her grandparents, who raised her in Batesland.

“I’m really proud of her for having accomplished a lot,” said Connie “She has done a lot of things that kids around here haven’t done. I’m proud of her, she is doing something with her life, and she is a good person.”

The Miss South Dakota Teen USA competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of South Dakota in the Miss Teen USA pageant. The pageant is directed by Future Productions.

It has been since 1996 that Indian country in South Dakota has seen a contestant in this preliminary to the national pageant when Tate Win Means won the title.

The 2013 Miss South Dakota Teen pageant is scheduled to be held on November 2 and 3 in Brandon.
