Firm pulls out of controversial mine opposed by Alaska Natives

A firm that put $541 million into the controversial Pebble Mine in Alaska has withdrawn from the project.

Anglo American, one of the world's largest mining companies, was part of the Pebble Partnership with Northern Dynasty Minerals, a Canadian firm. Northern Dynasty said it would move forward with the project despite losing such a strong financial backer.

Tribes and Alaska Native corporations have been fighting the Pebble Mine out of concerns about the environment. The project site is near two rivers that produce nearly a quarter of the world’s sockeye salmon harvest.
