The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians broke ground on a $55 million health facility on Monday.

The tribe signed an agreement with the Indian Health Service to fast-track the 178,000 square-foot Choctaw Health Center. The facility is expected to open in the winter of 2014.

"Our tribe has changed dramatically over the years and the needs of our people have evolved as our tribe has grown," Chief Phyliss J. Anderson said at the groundbreaking ceremony, The Neshoba Democrat reported. "Today and together, we mark another important milestone as we break ground on the next generation of healthcare for our people."

The facility will be more than twice the size of the tribe's current health center.
