Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation seeks return of lake land

The Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation in North Dakota is once again seeking the return of 36,000 acres around Lake Sakakawea.

The tribe lost the land when the Garrison Dam was created in 1953. But efforts to return the acreage have been met with controversy from state and local officials and this time appears to be no different.

The land lies entirely within reservation borders. It is currently controlled by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

In the past, the agency has returned land to the tribe.
