Fond du Lac Band eager to participate in Cobell land buybacks

The Fond du Lac Band of Chippewa Indians in Minnesota is eager to participate in the Land Buy-Back Program for Tribal Nations.

The tribe is reaching out to its members with fractionated interests. As part of the program, they will be paid for their land and the parcels will be returned to the tribe.

“The problem is there are multiple, multiple tracts in the Fond du Lac Reservation that need to be cared for,” Chairwoman Karen Diver told The Cloquet Pine Journal . “We can’t implement a forest plan when we can’t care for it.”

The tribe hopes to contact landowners by the end of the year so they can participate. The $3.4 billion Cobell trust fund settlement authorizes $1.9 billion for land consolidation.
