New Mexico tribes hit with complaints over horse conditions

Two New Mexico tribes are facing complaints about the conditions of horses on their reservations.

A group called the New Mexico Wild Horse Relief Fund visited San Felipe Pueblo last week to feed horses after pictures that were posted on the Internet drew outrage. The tribe says some of the animals have been dumped on the reservation.

“We don’t own the horses,” Debra Haaland, the tribe's administrator, told The Albuquerque Journal . “We didn’t ask for them, but they’re on our land.”

Officials at Kewa Pueblo have heard complaints too. Governor Felix Tenorio Jr. said the tribe is dealing with at least one starving horse.

“We’re trying to contact the owner to see what’s going on.” Tenorio told the Journal.
