Oregon governor set to veto bill with Indian mascot exception

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber (D) is expected to veto a bill that allows public schools to keep their Indian mascots as long as a tribe supports it.

Last year, the Oregon Board of Education voted 5-1 to prohibit schools from using Native American names, symbols or images as mascots. Affected schools were given until 2017 to make changes.

But Senate Bill 215 allows schools to keep their mascots if they reach an agreement with the tribe closest to the school. Some tribes say they should be able to support Indian mascots while others agree with the ban.
