Miccosukee Tribe asked to pay $3.2M for wrongful death case

The Miccosukee Tribe of Florida is being asked to pay a $3.2 million judgment in a wrongful death case.

Two tribal members were found responsible for the death of a woman in a drunken-driving accident. But Tammy Gwen Billie and her father, Jimmie Bert, haven't paid the judgment, citing a lack of funds.

The tribe, however, footed the bill for the defense team, to the tune of $3.1 million. So the attorney for the husband and son of Liliana Bermudez, who was killed in the accident, says the tribe should also be held responsible for the judgment.

The tribe disagrees and has cited its sovereign immunity. A decision from state court could come as early as today, The Miami Herald reported.
