Inquest process starts for deaths of seven Native students

An initial hearing was held today for the inquest into the deaths of seven Native students in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The students -- six males and one female -- died in Thunder Bay while attending school away from their reserves. The first death occurred in 2000 and the last one occurred in 2011.

The families of six of the students are seeking standing to participate in the inquest. The Nishnawbe Aski Nation, the Northern Nishnawbe Education Council and Ontario Regional Chief Stan Beardy are also seeking standing.

A date for the inquest hasn't been set.
