Audio from SCIA hearing with Interior Secretary Sally Jewell

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee held a hearing this afternoon with Interior Secretary Sally Jewell.

Jewell took over the Interior Department on April 12. She vowed to improve government-to-government relations with tribes and uphold the federal government's trust responsibilities.

Jewell said the sequestration of the federal budget is hurting Indian Country. She said students at Bureau of Indian Education schools, which already deal with limited resources, will be affected.

"Indian education is an embarrasment," Jewell told members of the committee.
