Bill introduced to extend federal recognition to Lumbee Tribe

Two members of Congress introduced a bill to extend federal recognition to the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.

During the height of the termination era in the 1950s, Congress passed a law that identified the Lumbees as "Indians" but denied them the benefits associated with federal status. H.R.1803 would clarify the tribe's federal recognition once and for all.

The bill is sponsored by Rep. Richard Hudson (R-North Carolina), a new member of Congress, and Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-North Carolina).

The Obama administration supported a similar version of the bill during the 112th Congress.
