Sen. Max Baucus of Montana to announce plans for retirement
Tuesday, April 23, 2013
Sen. Max Baucus (D-Montana), the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, won' t be seeking re-election in 2014, The Hill reports.
Baucus has been an ally to tribes on taxation issues. He supports the equal treatment of tribes in issuing tax-exempt bonds for economic development projects.
Baucus also played a key role in the permanent reauthorization of the Indian
Health Care Improvement Act. His committee ensured that tribal citizens can't be taxed for health care services provided by tribal governments.
The Patient
Protection and Affordable Care Act also exempts American Indians and Alaska Natives who receive care through the Indian Health Service from the health insurance mandate.
