Moapa Band hosts 16-mile walk to promote renewable energy

The Moapa Band of Paiute Indians in Nevada held a 16-mile walk on Saturday to promote clean energy.

The "Coal to Clean Energy" began at the NV Energy coal-fired power plant next to the reservation. It ended at the site of the tribe's 350 megawatt solar energy facility.

"We don’t want the coal plant to be replaced by another polluting power plant - like a gas plant," Chairman William Anderson said at the walk, The Mesquite Local News reported. "We want a switch to truly clean sustainable energy sources like the solar project that will be built in our reservation.”

The tribe says the coal-fired power plant has contributed to health problems on the reservation.
