Terry Gibson, the chairman of the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of Idaho, died on Thursday. He was 52.

GIbson was in his second term as chairman. He was credited with stopping the placement of a U.S. Air Force bombing range near the reservation in the 1990s.

“Terry was an outstanding leader and he was my friend. We worked together on projects to benefit tribal members and he was always a trusted partner and strong leader with the courage and foresight to tackle the many issues facing the tribes," Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) said in a statement.
