Alaska Native director of Alutiiq Museum steps down from post

Sven Haakanson Jr. has stepped down as executive director of the Alutiiq Museum.

Haakanson, who won a MacArthur Foundation award for his efforts to preserve Alutiiq language, history and culture, said he was going to pursue other opportunities.

"We've been able to raise a real awareness of the Alutiiq culture for everybody on Kodiak Island, basically around the world," Haakanson told The Kodiak Daily Mirror.
