The
Lower Brule Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is busy popping corn -- 17 million pounds every year, to be more precise.
The tribe started
Lakota Foods seven years ago. All of the company's popcorn is grown on the reservation.
“It’s unique because it’s raised, cleaned and packaged right here in South Dakota, but people don’t realize that and there are other people trying to copy it,” Barry Heiss, the manager of the Lower Brule Farm Corp., told the Associated Press.
The tribe's popcorn products are available for purchase online. The tribe also sells to grocery stores and sells popcorn to other food manufacturers.
