Celebration planned for 100 years of of Chiricahua freedom

The Mescalero Apache Nation of New Mexico and the Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma will be commemorating 100 years of freedom for the Chiricahua people this weekend.

The Chiricahua Apache were taken into captivity in 1886 and kept as prisoners of war at various locations in the U.S. They were finally released in 1813 and 1814, with some returning to their homelands in southern New Mexico and others staying in Oklahoma.

The events will include a parade and dances on the Mescalero Apache Reservation on Friday. On Saturday, the tribes will re-enact a trip the former prisoners of war took from Tularosa, New Mexico, to the present-day reservation.
