Conference tackles crimes of violence against Indian women

A two-day conference in Montana addressed domestic violence and sexual assault in Indian Country.

The Montana Native Women’s Coalition organized the meeting to raise awareness of crimes against Indian women. “I want to have all the rights for the Native women as all other women in Montana,” said Patty McGeshick, the group's chair, The Helena Independent Record reported.

Attendees heard from Gov. Steve Bullock (D). He said he would work with groups like the coalition to address high rates of violence in Indian Country.

"The next generation, and all the generations that follow, must learn that the behaviors that lead to violating others are not something to be proud of. Our prevention efforts must be diligent,” Bullock said, the Record reported.
