Oklahoma tribes seek to extend talks for tobacco compacts

Tribal leaders in Oklahoma are seeking to extend negotiations for new tobacco compacts, The Native American Times reports.

Twenty-two tribes signed a letter to Gov. Mary Fallin (R) asking for an extension until August 30. The current agreements expire in June.

“We want to be unified in our efforts in the renegotiation and ensure all are treated fairly,” Osage Nation Chief John Red Eagle told the paper.

One tribe, the Kaw Nation, has signed a new compact with Fallin.
