Actress Michelle Williams on the cover of AnOther Magazine.
AnOther Magazine said actress Michelle Williams wasn't dressed up to look "Native" even though her appearance has been widely interpreted as such. In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, the magazine said the look was "inspired by multiple fashion and cultural references, characters and eras" and denied it had a "racist subtext." The Native American Journalists Association, however, said the photos evoked stereotypes about Native people. "Any time a non-Native person is styled to appear Native American, it perpetuates a stereotype that all Native people look like this, that Native people do not exist or even evokes comparisons of this group to that of mythical beings," NAJA said in a statement.
