The
House Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs has scheduled its first hearing of the 113th Congress.
The subcommittee will hold an oversight hearing on federal recognition next Tuesday, March 19.
Lawmakers will hear the perspective of the
Interior Department, which
failed to send representatives to a hearing on the subject during the last session of Congress.
For the 113th Congress, the subcommittee will continue to be chaired by
Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska).
The Republican majority has a total of eight members, including newcomer
Rep. Markwayne Mullin
(R-Oklahoma), a citizen of the
Cherokee
Nation.
On the Democratic side,
Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (D-Hawaii) is the new ranking member.
The subcommittee has a total of six members, including newcomer
Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-California), who has experience with Indian issues.
