Column: Memorial service honors Richard Twiss, Rosebud Sioux

A memorial service Sunday will honor a pastor, professor, author and community leader whose work on the Rosebud Indian Reservation will continue.

Richard Twiss, an adjunct faculty member at Sioux Falls Seminary and a member of the Rosebud Sicangu Lakota, died Feb. 9 after a heart attack that occurred three days earlier. He was 58.

Twiss, who had lived in Vancouver, Wash., in 1981, co-founded the nonprofit Wiconi International in 1997 with his wife, Katherine. He called for Native American Christians to worship without shedding traditional customs and attire.
