The
Skokomish Tribe is suing the state of Washington to clarify its hunting rights under the 1855 Treaty of Point No Point.
The tribe signed away its territory in exchange for the “privilege of hunting and gathering roots and berries on open and unclaimed lands.” The lawsuit seeks a determination of those rights and the boundaries of the treaty lands.
The defendants include state game officials who have allegedly interfered with tribal members who have tried to hunt and collect berries on the treaty lands.
