The
Department of Justice is seeking the dismissal of a a lawsuit filed by
Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico.
The tribe is seeking title to over 94,000 acres that the federal government acquired in 2000.
But DOJ says the tribe already received a settlement for the land after going through the Indian Claims Commission.
“Once paid, the award of the Commission barred the tribe from litigating claims against the United States,” government attorneys said in response to the lawsuit, The Albuquerque Journal reports.
The land that was purchased in 2000 is part of the
Valles Caldera National Preserve.
