Leaders of the Eastern Band of Cherokee
Indians hope a $1,000 fine will deter domestic violence crimes on the reservation.
“If your pocketbook is going to get hit, you are going to be less likely to engage in that type of behavior,” council member Terri Henry told The Asheville Citizen-Times. “We need to get people’s attention, and this is one way to do that.”
The tribe will use the money to fund victim services and public education about domestic violence, the paper said.
