The
Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is helping elders with utility payments.
The Elders In Need program helped about 1,200 elders pay their utility bills this past winter.
Each received a $200 disbursement.
“They (elders) may have to choose between paying a utility bill or buying their medication,” Crystal Thomas, the Family Assistance assistant manager, told The Cherokee Phoenix. “We don’t want to see that happen. This helps put a little more money in their pocket so they can use it for other essential living needs that they have.”
Eligible elders can receive payments twice a year under the program.
