The
Bureau of Indian Affairs is providing mobile fingerprinting units to the
Spirit Lake Nation in North Dakota.
The units will be used to take fingerprints of foster parents on the reservation. According to the BIA, the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 requires fingerprints of all adults in foster homes.
“The collaboration by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Spirit Lake Tribe to expedite the fingerprinting process for foster homes demonstrates our joint commitment to protect the children while improving the efficiency of foster care services on the Fort Totten Indian Reservation,” Assistant Secretary Kevin Washburn said in a
press release.
The BIA is currently handling social services on the reservation because the tribe requested a retrocession.
The retrocession is due to run until Ocrober 1 of this year.
