Indigenous leaders demand protection for homelands in Brazil

Indigenous leaders went to the capital of Brazil on Tuesday to seek protections for their homelands.

Tribes are facing encroachments from loggers and ranchers. They delivered a petition to the county's leaders calling for the government to complete the demarcation of their territory, a promise that was made in a constitutional law in 1988.

The petition also called for the rejection of a constitutional amendment that would transfer the demarcation authority from the president to the legislature and for the courts to resolve indigenous cases in a timely manner.
