Yakama Nation calls for halt to pipeline across treaty territory

The Yakama Nation of Washington is asking the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to stop construction of a water pipeline.

The pipeline passes through treaty territory, where the tribe retains hunting, fishing and gathering rights. "Current construction cannot be sustained without additional destruction of significant archaeological resources," council member Ruth Jim said in a statement, the Associated Press reported.

Williams-Northwest Pipeline said it showed an archaeological report to the Cowlitz Tribe and the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. But the Yakamas say they weren't consulted.
